Adam Cates has built a career in the entertainment field as a director, choreographer, playwright, best-selling author, creative consultant, and dance and theatre educator. 

Adam is on the performing arts faculty at PACE UNIVERSITY, also teaching at BROADWAY DANCE CENTER, STEPS, and THE GROWING STUDIO in New York City. He is a founding faculty member of COMMERCIAL DANCE INTENSIVE, and has conducted master classes and workshops across the United States, as well as in Canada, Spain, and Bermuda.

Adam is the author of THE BUSINESS OF SHOW, a best-selling guidebook for young professionals. He co-conceived, choreographed, and co-wrote the book for THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SNOOPY in collaboration with Larry Grossman, Andrew Lippa, Kaitlin Hopkins, and Peanuts Worldwide. Premiering regionally at Theater Under the Stars, the show is now available for license from Concord Theatricals.

Adam has directed musicals and opera across the US including A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER (Playhouse on the Square), BIG RIVER (Sondheim Center),MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES (Anchorage Opera), and ANYTHING GOES 

(Nevada Rep). THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA at Juilliard Opera, for which Adam provided movement and intimacy choreography, was described as "a viscerally overwhelming performance,

...with uninhibited emotion and physicality" by The New York Times. Choreography highlights include the American premiere of JEEVES & WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE (Hartford Stage, dir. Sean Foley), and sold-out productions of LA BOHEME (The Santa Fe Opera, dir. Mary Birnbaum) THE LITTLE MERMAID (Arkansas Rep, dir. Melissa Rain Anderson), Disney's BEAUTY & THE BEAST (Music Theatre Wichita, dir. Wayne Bryan), and MY FAIR LADY (Gulfshore Playhouse, dir. Kristen Coury).

On Broadway, Adam associate choreographed ANASTASIA and the Tony-winning "Best Musical" A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER (dir. Darko Tresnjak). He assisted Kathleen Marshall on her Tony-winning revival of ANYTHING GOES, and Tommy Tune & Patti Colombo on the national tour of DOCTOR DOLITTLE.

Adam holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts/Performance Creation from Goddard College and a BA in Theatre from the University of Utah. His hometown, Reno, Nevada, proclaimed November 24th, 2014 "Adam Cates Day" in honor of his contribution to the arts.
